Museum Happenings September 2024

This month, the Society is thrilled to roll out a line-up of fantastic events. Anyone joining us will find the grounds in impeccable shape – a testament to the tireless efforts of our Buildings and Grounds Committee. Amidst the buzz, we are delighted to welcome another intern this semester as we once again team up with the university to shape the skills of future professionals. As we approach the finale of 2024, expect an array of activities that promise to both entertain and enlighten. Keep your eyes peeled for our newsletter updates and join us for one of the Society’s many free and exciting events.

As September greets us, so does the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival. The Society is eagerly counting down to Saturday, September 7, when from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., we will be fully immersed in the festivities. Visitors will find reenactors stationed on the Clark House's front lawn. Meanwhile, the mansion will open its doors for tours, allowing a peek into the past. The Armory will host two engaging workshops and there will be historical crafts along South 6th Street, providing insight into the area’s past. The Society is excited to join the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival, showcasing our county and region’s dynamic and rich history. See our previous blog post for more information with listings of events and their locations.

As the leaves turn golden and autumn begins, we eagerly anticipate the return of the Victorian Ladies Tea. The event promises another delightful event as Mary Jo Bowes and David Tabish delve into the intricate tapestry of marriage and the evolving challenges couples face as years go by. The event will be warmed by a selection of meticulously brewed teas and Café Amadeus coffee, accompanied by a spread of irresistible home-baked pastries to indulge in. Regrettably, this tea has already been completely booked by the time of this article's publication. However, fear not - those who missed out on this occasion can look forward to a festive holiday tea planned for November.

Once more, the echoes of melody will fill the grand corridors of the Clark House, as we bring back the popular Chickering Piano Program. Mark your calendars for this free event on Thursday, September 19, commencing at 6:30 p.m.. Our very own Hazel Johnston has outdone herself, assembling a talented roster of musicians each with their own unique selections. This event is open to all those who appreciate the magic of music and will be followed by a delightful array of refreshments.

Gabriella Byrne is embarking on a new and exciting chapter in her professional journey. Gabi’s final day in the library will be Friday, September 6. As we bid her farewell, we express our profound appreciation for her steadfast commitment and dedication to the Society. Through her efforts, numerous patrons have had the opportunity to explore their family’s link to Indiana County. The legacy she leaves behind is one of fostering connections and enabling discoveries, and we wish her the best in her future endeavors. In the spirit of progress, we are now accepting applications to fill the position of library assistant. This serves as an open call to individuals who share our passion for community and history.

October is consistently an exciting month for the Society, and this year is no exception. We are eagerly looking forward to our Annual Meeting, to be hosted at the historic Indiana Theater. The Annual Meeting is slated for October 17 at 5:45 p.m., followed by a program on the theater. Refreshments will also be served following the program. The Annual Meeting serves as a nice way to reflect on the preceding year's accomplishments while looking ahead to the future. The nominating committee will also make their recommendations for new board members.

As we usher in a fresh semester, the Society is thrilled to welcome our new intern, Dante Maffessanti, to the Society. Dante will be delving into a myriad of library and museum tasks that promise a hands-on, enriching experience. His journey with us this semester will see him honing his skills in exhibit development and cataloging our treasured items. Dante is not new to our collection; his previous collaborations with us, through his classwork, provide him with a unique perspective on this new venture.

As the seasons change and we press on into the coming months, it is impossible to ignore the buzz of activity that underscores our collective dedication to crafting unique experiences. Our Society invites you to become part of our ongoing narrative, either by attending our forthcoming events or by stepping up to volunteer. It is an opportunity to infuse our plans with your unique perspective and to contribute to the shaping of the year ahead. As our annual gathering draws near, we are deep in the throes of budgeting, orchestrating events, and project planning. We invite you to join us in this shared endeavor of preserving the county’s past and work alongside us in molding the Society’s future.
