Museum Happenings November 2022

With the year slowly ticking down to its end, the Society has accomplished much and has plenty to look forward to during the final weeks of 2022. With the Annual Meeting now concluded, important business for the year is complete. New board positions have been assigned and the framework is set for a productive 2023.

October’s events were incredibly successful. The Annual Meeting was another wonderful evening courtesy of the diligent planning of the Program Committee. The night walk was also well attended and saw most of the tours reach their full capacity. In all, eighty-two visitors passed through the grounds that night. The month concluded with Trick-or-Treat and some Halloween fun at the Clark House. Thank you to all who joined us and contributed to these spooky events.

The passing of the chicken from outgoing president Mary Yanity to incoming president JoAnne McQuilkin.

Later this month is the grand opening of the toy exhibit. The display will be a step back in time to a department store toy section from the 1950s and 60s. Many members have graciously donated or loaned their childhood treasures to make this exhibit possible. Join the Society November 15 at 6pm for the opening reception. The Open Arts Show also goes up this month and is open to tour during regular museum hours beginning November 19.

A surprise guest will be visiting Downtown Indiana for the It's a Wonderful Life Festival and the HGSIC is proud to host him for a special event! You are cordially invited to Tea with Jimmy Stewart on November 19th from 2pm to 4pm at the Historic Clark House. Enjoy tea or coffee and pastries as Jimmy Stewart reenacts Shop Around the Corner, then ask him all the things you are dying to know about his films or favorite roles to play. Space is limited for this holiday kickoff event. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance. Visit the Society’s website for more information on this memorable event.

Mark your calendars for the Society’s Annual Christmas Open House. The evening is sure to delight with a special performance of “A Dash of Dickens-A Western Pennsylvania Christmas Carol” written by Mary Jo Bowes. The evening will also feature a freshly decorated Clark House, Victorian Carols, and seasonal refreshments. This event is free and open to the public and will take place Friday December 9, with the performance beginning promptly at 6pm.

The Society will be open on Sunday November 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., as part of a stop for the It’s a Wonderful Life Festival, providing additional time for visitors to view the holiday exhibits. On another note, the museum and library will be closing week of Thanksgiving and reopening on Tuesday November 29. We are going to take this opportunity to allow our volunteers and staff to get some much-needed rest and spend some time with their families.

The Society recently welcomed several new businesses to its sponsorship list. Memory Lane Media and Kayden & Vaporis LLC both pledged as Silver Sponsors. The United Commercial Travelers Council 598 now supports the Society under a Bronze Sponsorship. We welcome these new businesses and greatly appreciate their support.

This November, the Society has much to be thankful for. We would not be able to accomplish half of what we do without our dedicated volunteers, enthusiastic interns, and our wonderful members. We are also fortunate to have two historic buildings and a library with more than a lifetime’s worth of reading material. If you are in the area and simply must tour the displays, please contact the Society prior to the closing date and we would be happy to arrange a tour for you. The Society wishes to thank all who have contributed this past year and hope that you and your family have a safe and happy holiday.
