Fundraising Update July 2024

May was a busy month for the fundraising committee. May 18 was the Spring Tea, and the Clark House was bustling with this sold-out event. The attendees were treated to a variety of tea sandwiches, some of which were offered for the first time. No tea is complete without the sweets, and there were plenty to pass around. As usual the Society provided a variety of teas. A special thanks to the 7th Street Marketry for supplying a new tea flavor and to Caffe Amadeus for their continuing support of supplying coffee.

Mary Jo Bowes entertained those in attendance with her usual delightful program. Courtship Games used humor to illustrate the ever-evolving act of courtship. The program began with readings from literature or movie scenes to take a look at the interaction between a man and a woman in a romantic situation. Later in the program, attendees were “tempted” with a few examples of “pick-up” lines. How about…

Are you a loan? Because you’ve got my interest.

This must be a museum because you’re a work of art.

I’m no electrician, but I can light up your world.

Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?

Ladies, be honest: which one (if any!) would work on you?

It was a fun event, and each person left with a favor and a little gift and hopefully a little education on courting.

Our second event was the Oldies But Goodies with Books Sale. It ran for five days, and many people went home with “new” treasures. It was the Society’s first rummage sale, and plans are already being formed for next year’s version. The plans for that sale include more items and a wider variety.

The fundraising committee is now working on future events. The first one will be the Fall Tea with a program titled “A Mix of Memories” featuring David Tabish and Mary Jo Bowes. Tabish will be performing an original one-act play about an incident from his childhood in his native Pittsburgh. Part two will have Bowes join Tabish in reading a scene about an old married couple who share a humorous but often erroneous recollection from their past. As usual, there will be savories, sweets, teas and coffee, and pleasant conversation. This will all happen on September 14, and tickets can be purchased on the Historical Society website. The last tea was sold out, so remember to purchase your ticket early.

An evening evening event for the Clark House is also in the planning stages. The Victorian age had strict rules about how their gatherings were conduct and took a great deal of planning. It was an elegant and entertaining evening. Ours, too, is taking a lot of planning, and while hopefully it will be elegant and entertaining, we will skip most of the rules.

Our events have always focused on adults, but in a change-up we have decided to have one for the kids. It is also in the early planning stages, so stay tuned for more information.

The last event for this year will be the Christmas Tea on November 23. Continuing with our tea format, there will be food and entertainment, and this time guests will have an opportunity to view the Clark House all decked out for the holidays. Mark your calendar and go to our website to purchase your tickets.
