Is there still romance in modern dating? With the rise of modern apps, people now turn to Tinder and Bumble for dating assistance. As ideas and expectations about marriage have evolved, so has the ritual of courtship. Marriage is now linked more to affection and less to alliances.
As this link to affection expanded, suitors strived to “fill her ears with themes of love”. Mary Jo Bowes has researched our courting techniques, and “Games of Courtship” will be presented at the Spring Victorian Ladies Tea on Saturday, May 18 at 2:00 pm at the Silas M. Clark House. Come to enjoy the savories, the sweets, and of course the tea. Caffe Amadeus will again be supplying their special coffee blend.
After enjoying Mary Jo’s program, you can decide: have we gained independence and with it a better chance of a loving partnership or have we just lost romance? Tickets are available at the HGSIC website.
HGSIC has been hosting teas for many years now with very good results. We are now ready to expand our audience. We are hoping to find a niche in Indiana County’s tourist business. Our county not only has families or small groups visiting our area, but also bus tours have made stop-overs in Indiana County. HGSIC hopes to host teas for more bus tours. It would be a nice respite on a busy tour day.
We would also like to offer a tea for the bride-to-be or the mother-to-be in the Clark House. There are only a limited number of dates available, so if you are interested, please contact the Society by calling 724-463-9600 or emailing fundraising@hgsic.org. There are different options with differing costs.
Finally, as the groundhog promised, spring is here. When our thoughts turn to spring, reluctantly they also turn to spring cleaning. The fundraising committee has been thinking about cleaning and making room for new items. From May 21 through May 25, HGSIC will be having a sale from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. each day. We have appropriately named it “Oldies but Goodies”--with books. It will have a variety of items. As usual, proceeds will benefit the Historical Society. Please stop by. Maybe you will find that special book at a very low price, a lovely set of potholders, or that unique piece for which you have been searching!
